We headed to four countries in Scandinavia during a trip that started in late August and concluded on Labor Day. Logistically, the trip started normally enough, then picked up steam during the last third of the trip, where we changed locations every day to see as much as we could.
The map below provides an overview of the Scandinavian sojourn:
Here’s a quick run down of the numbered legs of the sojourn noted above:
- Fly into Copenhagen on a redeye. Stay in Copenhagen for 3 nights.
- Train up to Stockholm on the morning of Day 4. Stay in Stockholm for 3 nights.
- Take overnight ferry to Helsinki on the evening of Day 7. Stay in Helsinki for 1 night.
- Fly to Oslo on the morning of Day 9. Stay in Oslo for 1 night.
- Planes, trains, and automoboats: Check out of hotel (but leave luggage). Take trains and boats throughout the day to experience Norway in a Nutshell. Stay the night in Bergen on the coast. Fly back to Oslo the next day. Say in Oslo for 1 night.
- Fly home.
The best experiences during the trip included:
Copenhagen – atmospheric canals and a very cool late-summer vibe among the Danes
Oslo – astonishingly modern and amazingly livable city (and a visually compelling new opera house)
The Vasa museum in Stockholm – Holy crap, an intact 17th-century Swedish warship recovered from the depths!
Some of the most amazing restaurants we’ve experienced to date – Geranium and Kadeau (Copenhagen), Oaxen Krog (Stockholm), and Olo (Helsinki)
We’ll post blog entries on these highlights and the rest of the trip over the next couple of weeks.
